About Me
My name is David Overmyer, and I am not certain of this, but I think my father believes I am an atheist, just because I fail to recognize Christianity as the one true religion. He couldn’t be more wrong. I find that I believe in god in all his/her forms. I am an ordained minister with the Universal Life Church, and have been since 2009. Sure, it’s easy to get ordained, but that doesn’t mean I take it any less seriously than a monk, a priest, a rabbi, or any other sacred role. I made the choice to become ordained when I found that people were seeking me out for guidance. Mostly friends and acquaintances, but there were also people I barely met and some that I’d never met before in my life. They just seem to have a feeling that I’d have the answers for them. That’s the strangest thing, I’d be sitting at a bus stop or in a waiting room and the fellow next to me would spontaneously just ask me for advice on something that was troubling him or her. These weren’t simple questions either, they were profound. Questions that I just would not have expected someone to ask of a stranger. Sure, I was taken aback at first, but eventually I simply assumed I either had a friendly look to me, or seemed approachable, or there was just some “thing” that drew people to me. Thus I made the decision that if I was going to take on the responsibility of listening to these people and offering my best guidance, I should have the credentials to ease my conscience about it. Which is the same reason I am sharing this site with you. I’d like to think I have something to offer you that just might make your lives a little more enjoyable and fulfilling.
I see spirituality as a multifaceted jewel. Each facet is a religion, the core of each religion, when added together, makes up spirituality. Thus when a religion speaks of the one true god, they are correct, but they only see one piece of the one true god. You have to broaden your vision if you wish to see god in his/her ultimate brilliance. Now don’t get me wrong, if you are happy following a set prescribed religion, then by all means follow it. You will still reach god eventually, but I believe there can be so much more to experience.
I found this analogy of a jewel, in of all places, a Fantasy Novel series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman: “Rose of the Prophet” trilogy and it struck a cord. Oh, sure, you can say, “Oh, yeah, this guys is a complete wacko. He finds truth in a made up story.” I can make the same argument for the bible, but I won’t touch on that right now. Well, the funny thing is truth can be found in the most amazing places. For instance, four hundred years ago, a man flying was fantasy, and yet, we don’t even think twice about it today. I do recommend reading this series, not for the guidance of spirituality, but to get a look at the references to the various religions that the reader is slapped in the face with. There is an uncanny understanding of both Christianity and Arabic traditions and beliefs.
It has become my understanding from reading various religions, that the general consensus is to follow god in the hopes of peace and everlasting bliss in the hereafter. Why wait until then? Do you really think we were put on this earth just to provide a pathway for our “life” after death? I think we were put here to enjoy the life we are given, and experience it to the fullest. Thus our spirit grows, and we will have a far more fulfilled afterlife. I am in my second marriage, I have four beautiful children, and to this date two lovely grandchildren. I have a mortgage, a dog, and two cars that are over ten years old. I have a job that pays just enough to make ends meet, and provides enough extra that we can go to the movies every couple of weeks or so. AND I am happy. I find peace in my life. I am not “stressed out”. I don’t have high blood pressure. I can enjoy spending what time I get with my family and friends. This is something I attribute to a broader vision and understanding, an acceptance of what I have and what life has given me. Not dwelling on my death or what awaits me at the end of a road that I don’t have any choice but to walk down. I’m not afraid of death, I’ve accepted that eventually I’m going to take that final step. I’m not planning on rolling over right now, in fact I plan on fighting for life the whole step of the way. However, when the time comes, I plan on looking death straight in the face and unflinchingly step into the next adventure of my existence.
I have found that a well balanced spirit, provides for a well balanced life. I have learned to change what I can change, accept what I cannot change, and I strive to know when and where the difference is. The key is not to sweat the small stuff. In the grand skeem of things, most of it doesn’t matter anyway.
Growing up, my father rarely if ever hired anyone to repair things around the house. My brother and I were his work crew in all repairs. We built houses, fixed cars, worked as farm hands, ranch hands, landscapers, brick layers, ditch diggers, electricians, etc… As I grew older I found that computers were emerging from the pages of science fiction. We got our first computer in 1983 and with a couple of weeks I had written my first game. I was 14 at the time. I went on to take all the computer courses my high school offered. I then spent the next year after high school, both day and night classes, getting a two year degree in programming. When I graduated, there were no programming jobs available in Tucson, or at least none who’s language I cared to write in. I then got a job as a technician, and I’ve been doing that ever since. I found that my programming background has helped tremendously, as the industry changed from primarily hardware repairs, to almost solely software repairs. I then branched into web design and database structure.
You may ask what does all this have to do with spirituality, well in essence it has giving me the knowledge on how to break down a problem into its basic components and find the solution to repair, or improve, it. Which in essence is the same thing we do with everything in life. For the most part I simply wanted to give you an idea of just who I am. Though with all of my technical skills I am also an avid reader. I read at night before falling asleep, and I listen to audio books in my commutes. My interest vary immensely. I have read spiritual books, religious (yes, there is a difference), self help, history, medical, fiction, science fiction, fantasy, classic works, Shakespeare, Dickens, and many many more. I have the uncanny ability to recall most of what I read, sometimes verbatim. I have also found that just about everything I read has some teaching element included. Each has some moral lesson, or knowledge, or motivation, or what have you. As I pick up this information, file and regurgitate it, I find that I am also teaching/helping/motivating those who care to listen. Thus it made sense to use the internet as another medium to share that knowledge. Plus the same skill that allows me to be good at my job, also gives my insight into life and spirituality, and that is puzzle/problem solving skills. That skill is what allows me to break most of what I see into its essential parts.
